Kyo was the first character that came to me for this novel. He’s definitely grown a lot as a character as I’ve progressed through his arc and came to know him better.
He was originally the only viewpoint character, but the world has expanded so much that he is now one of a rotating cast, but I do have a soft spot for him. He is one of the few within the confines of the Collective who feels uneasy with some of the policies, like Resourcing, but it’s dangerous for him to express his views.
Writing Kyo always came easy to me for the most part. I did have some trouble with some of his negative character traits, like his dislike for species other than humans, but I really thrived with his arc overall because it was nice to see him grow and change throughout the story.
His relationship with Driftsong was also a lot of fun to write. I drew on my experiences learning new languages and cultures on my own time, so I hope those scenes and chapters really come alive.
